Russell's Vipers typically inhabit lowland grasslands, thickets, open forests, and agricultural areas, often avoiding human settlements. The snake's matte colour allows it to blend easily with the ground, making it difficult to spot. If people approach too closely without noticing the snake, it may attack out of fear. As good swimmers, Russell’s Vipers have spread to different parts of the country via river currents and floodwaters.

The bitten limb should not be moved. If bitten on the leg, the person must sit and avoid walking. If bitten on the hand, the hand should be kept still. Movement of the joints in the hands and feet can cause the venom to spread quickly through the bloodstream due to muscle contractions. The affected area should be gently washed with soap or wiped with a wet cloth. Remove any watches, jewellery, talismans, or turbans. Do not prick, needle, or apply any ointment or other substances to the bite. If bitten by a snake, do not waste time seeking treatment from a local quack healer (Ojha) and go to the nearest hospital or healthcare centre immediately. Don't panic, as Russell's Viper antivenom is available free of cost at government hospitals.
